Hello Everyone,

welcome to another day that the Lord has made.

I must start out by introducing myself. I AM Darlene Crowley and I come before you, a walking, talking, breathing miracle of our times.

I am what you often hear as the face and epitome of cancer, and by the grace of God, and His grace only, I am here to share with you the importance of awareness, along with what I consider as the essence of "community", and where you can find it! Gilda's Club.

As we all know, cancer has no prejudice. It attacks all ages, ethnic groups, men and women. Yet the survival rate for African American women with breast cancer is 3 times less than any other ethnic group. Why is this? Well amongst other reasons, we're not getting screened soon enough, if at all.

I grew up hearing, "I don't have money to go to the doctor", "I don't have insurance", "I don't want to know if there's anything there", and my grandmother's favorite, "If you find something, I'm not going to let you operate anyway". As Mr. Thomas Lawrence says, "Excuses are the tools of the incompetent" and this mindset must change!! We can't let fear run our lives any longer. Its detrimental to our health. Our very existence relies upon the mobility of our minds! We must challenge the pessimistic peabody, and grab hold to optimism! Again, we must be open to change, because after all, this is our lives we're talking about here.

As I mentioned before, I am a cancer patient, And I'm walkin what I'm talkin! My story can be seen on the "My Testimonial" page.

Not long after my hospice stay I met the program director of Gilda's Club, Ms. Susan Mingesz, at the 1st Annual educational forum for the Sankofa Project, which is another entity that's trying to bring help and awareness to the disparity of our african american community.

Ms. Mingesz approached me, out of a room of over 300 people and extended the love that Gilda's is known for. Gilda's Club is what, Khadijah, a friend of mine calls, a "Love House", where your own diagnosis of cancer, or your being a friend or family member of a cancer patient, is your only membership fee.

A home away from home, Gilda's Club is a place to go when the outside world just seems unbearable. Where you can leave your burdens at the "Red Door" and step into a safe haven of peace and laughter, in the midst of the storm. Allow Gilda's to become your "safe place" so to speak.

Our members are loving and are like family from the first day you walk in, welcoming everyone with open arms. Because, when cancer sneaks its way into our lives, whether its you, a friend, or family member, I don't think anyone would disagree that love, comfort, and support is so important at that time. And you're guaranteed to find that, and much more at Gilda's Club. I know I have, and so, I must pass it on

I look forward to starting with the Milwaukee, WI. Metcalfe Area, because I live in the same Aldermanic District, and I'm praying that I'm someday considered one of the individuals that brought "Positive Change!" into the community. I've seen and listened to the neighborhood activities, and I've learned that a cultivated foundation begins at Home! So, knowing that God has brought me back home for a purpose, I'd like to begin this game of Chess!(So to Speak), to bring LIFE back to the community. And with the community's assistance, we/re hoping to build self esteem and give encouragement to the future leaders of tomorrow! Our goal is to someday convert my home (into this art gallery) here in the inner city, and bring more culture back into the city. Years ago, and yet still today, In New York, its a natural and normal occurrence to enjoy the culture and arts of our african american people. Most every weekend friends and families gather together and visit the row houses, blocks apart to support the works of local artists, including local musicians for trio or quartet jam session. we're looking to bring that element BACK! , by starting here in my very own back yard. And, yes I am aware of our strong artistic grounding on the east and south sides of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Areas, but we sincerely feel our african american youths need examples of this quality, to challenge and encourage the gifts and talents that lie within themselves. We feel they need to know that someone cares . And that someone is willing to believe in them. "I Am That Someone". And we'd like to start by reaching out to the Metcalfe Neighborhood with hopes of just reminding these individuals, (be it children or adults), one at a time, that if they believe in themselves first, others will believe in them too. The Realization Of God Being Real And Will Being Done
So dynamic is the realization of God being real that you can't move, laying, sitting or standing there in total ecstasy because God's presence and empowerment is made known by a life-changing experience, a prayer answered, a hope realized, a sudden surprise or change of attitude or way of reacting that only God can make happen. It's felt, and is God's love and will being done, and doubts and fears, long-suffering and negativity we've been experiencing appears to have been all worthwhile just for that moment we realize how real God is and cares and is omnipotent and omniscient and can do whatever He pleases at any given time.

Darlene Is Ten Times Cooler Than I Will Ever Be.
Yo...so I'm computer illiterate, and I'm going to comment on your exhibition here. Anyway, I wanted to tell you that your images are sincerely powerful and disturbing. Why aren't cigarettes a banned drug? It's perplexing, and almost shocking to come back to Milwaukee after living paces like New York, Minneapolis where there is a public ban, and to see a few people's unhealthy choice imposed upon a room full of people. It's lunacy, and I can think of no more powerful way to call attention this than your images. They are not vague; they are undeniable, unglamorous, and are an effective counterbalance to every smoking ad, every image of old Hollywood glamour, out there. I hope this will be an ongoing project, and I'm proud of you. (Applause, Applause!) Talk to you soon, my sweet.x, Victoria

We still have a chance
We still have a chance even though a lot of are family members or people we know exposed people to smoking, like kids they are not always a victim. It's our surroundings. With more people becoming aware, seeing actual family members with this viscious disease people can change so there is still a chance. I feel bad for those who we can't save, but we still have a chance. If you see they are banning smoke a lot of places hospitals, restaurants, etc. So hopefully, people can stop. The key to stopping is never starting. I am glad that as survivor like you you can still spread your wisdom to other people. Love Nesha!

thanks again for the exhibition invite, and for the creation of this work. I think it's truly important, of course, but it means a lot to me personally as well becasue one of my brothesr smokes, and has for years, and I worry greatly about his health. I've asked him to take a look at your work, if and when he's up for it, and hopefully, he will. He wants to quit, but I think he just hasn't had enough of a reality dose to counteract the addiction...I think your work here can do great things. x,Victoria

Continued habits...
It appears the more you tell folks don't smoke, the more they can't wait. My 16 year old son has decided to start this bad habit in spite of watching his grandfather(my father) die of lung cancer. My mother smoked for over 20 years now at age 73 she is experiencing the side effects, she has since stopped smoking since she turned 50. I will share your exhibition with my son. Hopefully, he will see the health risk... Carolyn

Great job Darlene! I think it would be effective if pictures like these were allowed on the packs of cigarettes, then more people would think twice before starting this cancerous habit.

oh lord what an exhibit
Oh my Darlene, This exhibit is really hitting home I thought of all the cigarettes I have smoked in my life and I and how I have basically given myself away to this nicotine demon. I am battling this addition and this art show's first photograph made me sick and repulsed. To say your gallery has really been enlightning is an understatement.

I am also glad to see you come out of Hospice on Saturday (March 31). I knew your strength was going to guide you out of there once again. I know you body is changing, but part of everyone's life is learning to adapt with change. Let's write a book that absolutely shatters racism! Help me create a Movement. Let's write together. Creating Unity!!

Today I choose to start a movement to bring more unity between the races. Often, I witness prejudice between the races even among children who don't even understand Why they feel the way they do for another. Heck, within the same racial groups as well. Its learned behavior. Behavior that shouldn't have a home here in the year of 2007. We all face the same problems despite the amount of money in our pockets, or lack thereof. I'm sick of it! We're all encountering those silly little fights between partners because one of you forgot to, or didn't take the time to change the toilet paper last night. We're all the same. What about that first sign of gray hair that some of us panic about because Oh My Goodness! I'm only 40. That gray hair has no idea what color the person's head is that its attached itself to. Do you all see my point? We need change people. Most are afraid of change because we're afraid of what may evolve on the other side, we're afraid of our True capabilities, but without reaching deep within ourselves to at least put forth an effort, our world will remain the same. Everyone looking for something different while insisting on continued patterns. Well, this is my attempt to face my fears, and put forth my effort to create change. I want to help change the world, and what better place than the world's Interstate! Will You Help Me? So, I ask that you all embrace change and let's write a book together that shatters racism and exalts love. These pages are welcome to ALL, despite your race, age, sexual orientation, etc..........please feel free to write as much as you'd like, as many times as you'd like. This is NOT a JOKE, or GAMES of any kind. And please No Nudity. We must respect the children also, in order to teach them to respect us. If you're not serious about what I'm trying to do here, please dismiss yourself kindly. I ask that everyone please remain respectful and anything that I may consider offensive I may either bring it to the attention and vote of the public or decide to delete on my own decision. At this time I have no set limit to this book. I'm looking to reach the masses worlwide, so please tell your friends, family, girlfriends, boyfriends, significant others, employers, congressmen, senators, celebrities, everyday housewives, and anyone else you can think of. The idea is simple. In fact, I'm sure many of you have done this on a smaller level possibly growing up as a child. I will begin the start of this book and I just ask that everyone thereafter continue the book from the last entry of the previous person. I'm not aware if anyone else has ever done this and if so God Bless you. But, again, I'm looking to put forward my effort in creating change however God allows me to. As I traveled on 94 W the traffic was bumper to bumper. I had a headache that stayed with me for more than half the day,and I felt pretty worn down. I thought I'd never get home. Watching the woman in the Red subaru put her lipstick on after the second time made me realize I hadn't moved more than 4 feet in the last half hour. what the heck was the holdup? The screaming baby 2 lanes over must need a nap by now, can't they keep her quiet. the sun has to be draining her, you'd think they'd have a pacifier for her.
Honk Honk!, finally movement. I couldn't get home fast enough. Just as I approach the doorway, Ringggggg, Ringggggg, Ringggggg, hmmmph, Jim, what does he want now. "Hello". "Listen Regina, I really need you to hear me out about the boat. I spoke with the salesman and he's giving me until Friday to give him a down payment". "Jim, I told you, I do not want to hear about that boat anymore! my head is killing me and I am sick of going through this same argument over and over again. We cannot afford a boat Jim, we have too many other priorites and boarding the SS JIM Be Slim is not at the top of our list". "Listen, I just got home and I need to get in the house and relax, I'll see you when you get home from work".

The door slams behind her. "oh, hello Divine", their 3 1/2 pound chihuahua races to her feet clawing to receive the hugs and kisses she's been missing for the last 8 hours. Picking her up, she places her keys in the bright orange bowl that accents the beautiful coffee table. "How is my sweet today?" Ringggg, Ringggg, Ringgggg, picking up the phone, "Hello". "Honey, I'm stopping by the store on the way home is there anything you'd like me to pick up?" "Sure, can you grab a cantaloupe for breakfast in the morning and a bag of treats for Divine, she's running out". "Yeah sure, it seems she's always running out."

Rinnngggg, Rinngggg, , "Yes, Jim, what is it now?" "Hello", "Hello", Regina hangs up the phone. Dropping her body into the oversized Laz-y-Boy she received as a Christmas gift 2 years ago, Regina drifts into a welcoming sleep.

- Darlene (Journey)

The Ford-150 Silverado awakens regina out of her slumber. Seconds later Jim shoots through the door shouting, slamming it behind him. "Listen Regina, I'm the man of this house, I work hard to take care of the two us and every now and then I deserve to have some of the things that I want. I don't ask for much, just a few things here or there. Hmmmph, if you think about it, when was the last time you even remember me buying anything? I can tell you, September, 2000. And, aint nothing gonna stop me from gettin this boat"

- ItslikeCandeee1

"Jim" I'm tired. Had a headache most of the day, and on top of that, when I got in my car to head home in this 90 degree weather my air conditioner went out, and you kept calling me" about a boat that we can't afford! Regina hops out of the Lazy-Boy, and walks toward the bedroom. As he follows behind her, she screams and slams the door in his face.

alright, already . And not one of those thousand times I called, you ever mentioned to me that you weren't feeling well...sorry, but its such a good deal I don't want to pass it up. I just wanted your blessings and all. Regina sat on the bed with her head in her hands in discuss! When all of a sudden the bedroom door opens (Jim standing there with a crazy look on his face) "Jim please I don't feel like arguing anymore today". Jim still standing in the doorway with his hands in his pocket. "I didn't come home to argue with you either," "I thought you would have been excited to hear that all I have to do is put the down payment on the boat and then I would be-able to get it". Regina in a soft spoken tone, "But I thought we had already talked about we couldn't afford it. "No Regina you said we couldn't afford it, not we". Regina was silent for a minute. "Well, we can't , can we?" (Regina hoping Jim would say no). Jim sat down on the bed beside Regina with a smile on his face, took his hand to turn her face towards his, "Yes we can". Regina still looking him in the eyes, says "how can we, especially now that my air conditioning has gone out?"

"Regina listen, I'm really sorry that you're not feeling well this evening, I'll make this quick, so you can get some rest." "I wanted to surprise you but things don't always go our way." "I finally got that raise we'd been waiting on, so I can get your air conditioning fixed. Can you hold on until the weekend? "Really Jim?" Oh great! of course I can. I guess the boat won't be such a problem after all." Giving Jim a light kiss on the lips, Regina changes into her night clothes and slips under the the lavender scented sheets that ocassionally helped with the chronic headaches that had become a little more noticeable the last few months.

Leaving Regina to rest, Jim goes into the kitchen to put the champagne away he bought for their celebration. He grabs a heiniken from the fridge, chips from the cupboard, pulls up a seat and checks out the daily sports page.

The American Cancer Society invites everyone to join us at the 3rd Annual Sankofa Project Cancer Education Forum
as we celebrate National Cancer Minority Awareness Week, April 16 - 21, 2007!

The theme for this year's program is "Taking Positive Steps to Action" as we encourage individuals to Eat Right, Exercise, Maintain a Healthy Diet, Not Smoke and See a Doctor. We want to empower the community to be proactive about fighting this disease and many others.

We will provide a hot soul food lunch, free health screenings, free doctors consultations, and a host of great door prizes ($100 Gift Certificates to Lena's Food Market, Free Membership to the Northside YMCA). You can expect to be inspired by individuals chosen to take part in the program, informed by the host of local cancer doctors that are paving the way in cancer care and treatment in our community, and it is all FREE. This family event is designed to meet a definite need in our community.
